Debora Motyka

Debora Motyka is a litigation associate at McNaul Ebel. Her practice includes representing plaintiffs and defendants in commercial litigation, securities fraud, post-dissolution disputes and business disputes.

Before joining McNaul Ebel, Ms. Motyka was an associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in Washington, DC. There she worked on cases involving a number of substantive areas of law including intellectual property, products liability, securities fraud, securities enforcement, breach of contract, bankruptcy and insurance coverage. In addition, she participated in a variety of pro bono matters including drafting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court regarding the indefinite detention of Mariel Cuban detainees, securing housing for homeless clients and appealing a client's denial of disability benefits. She previously worked as a Research Assistant on domestic violence and family law issues and a Legal Intern to the Legal Aid Society of New York.

Ms. Motyka received her J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law, where she was a member of the International Law Review, the Mock Trial Board and the Student Bar Association. The Dean of the Law School honored Ms. Motyka for her service on the Student Bar Association and she received multiple Thurgood Marshall Scholar Awards commemorating her academic achievement. She received her B.A. in Psychology, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Washington in Seattle.

In her spare time, Ms. Motyka enjoys running, wine, travelling and photography.

Representative Cases

  • Abbott et al. v. Phillips et al. – Ms. Motyka represented Verizon, the reorganized debtor formerly known as WorldCom, Inc., in a $500 million securities fraud litigation brought by former shareholders of WorldxChange in the WorldCom bankruptcy against WorldCom and World Access. As a junior associate on this case, Ms. Motyka took and defended depositions, second-chaired dozens of depositions, drafted a Motion for Summary Judgment, and participated in developing the litigation strategy on the case.
  • TMG Health, Inc. v. UnitedHealth Group, Inc. – Ms. Motyka represented UnitedHealth and its subsidiary in a breach of contract action brought against it by an administrative services provider. Ms. Motyka drafted various legal memoranda analyzing complex factual and legal claims in the case and drafted a Motion to Compel Arbitration.
